Neumann BV33 based SUT unit

state-of-the-art mono/stereo SUT unit with one of the best step-up transformers ever made for use with high-end MC cartridges

Neumann - the reference since 1928

The history of professional audio technology is intimately linked to the name Neumann. Founded in Berlin in 1928, the German brand has been synonymous with superlative sound, pioneering research and development, and uncompromising quality. All over the world - in all famous recording studios, radio - and TV studios, concert halls, on film sets and on stage - if the sounds count for anything, Neumann microphones are there. For many decades too, the company was one of the leading manufacturers of disk cutting - and control room systems for the gramophone industry, constantly developing ingenious and innovative techniques. The company also built large professional audio mixing consoles for the broadcasting - and recording industry. Today, Georg Neumann GmbH of Berlin still specializes in the development and manufacturing of first-class microphones as well as studio monitors and - headphones. Last decades some vintage Neumann equipment related to the disk cutting systems are sought-after for high-end audio use at home, most wanted are for instance the Neumann DST stereo MC cartridge, the Neumann PA2 record player, the Neumann WV2 stereo phono tube equalizer amplifier and Neumann BV33 SUT, all designed and released in 1958 but after more than 65 years still state-of-the-art.

Neumann BV33/Haufe 2 x V264

One of the most rare and sought-after vintage MC (Moving Coil) step-up transformers is the Neumann BV33, designed and manufactured in 1958 for the famous and legendary state-of-the-art Neumann WV2 stereo MC phono tube equalizer amplifier to fulfill the need of high-quality stereo sound reproduction in professional audio environments. Initially the Neumann BV33 was manufactured by Telefunken, after 1962 - when the WV2 was succeeded by the WV2a - manufacturing of the Neumann BV33 was taken over and continued by Haufe GmbH in Germany and the type number changed from Neumann BV33 to Haufe 2 x V264. In addition to using the Neumann BV33/Haufe 2 x V264 in the Neumann WV2/WV2a, it was also used in the Neumann SEV 1, a humble stereo MC phono RIAA tube amplifier for general purpose applications. The Neumann BV33/Haufe 2 x V264 SUT consists of two identical and perfect matched transformers installed in one heavy gauge mu-metal screening can and has a fantastic linearity from 5 Hz - 50 kHz (5 Hz - 20 kHz +/- 0dB) which is achieved through ultratin layered high permalloy (alnico) sheets and special winding technology unique to Neumann, all resulting in a beautiful natural sound with great colour presentation and ultimate transparency, zero core-saturation and zero distortion. The Neumann BV33/Haufe 2 x V264 was/is especially designed for operation with the Neumann DST stereo MC cartridge but they were/are very flexible for application with other high-end low impedance and low output cartridges like for instance the EMT T-series - and Ortofon SPU cartridges. Currently the Haufe 2 x V264 is manufactured again by Haufe exclusive for me in limited numbers and completely according to the Neumann BV33 specifications of more than 65 years ago.

Neumann BV33 based SUT unit

The Neumann BV33 based SUT unit is a plug and play ready tailor-made stereo step-up transformer unit with the above described new manufactured Haufe 2 x V264 twin step-up transformer for use with low output and low impedance ( 2 Ohm - 100 Ohm) high-end stereo MC cartridges. All wires coming from the Haufe 2 x V264 are directly connected to the high-quality gold plated standard Neutrik RCA cinch in- and output connectors. To provide both mono and stereo playback/usage the Neumann BV33 based SUT unit is equipped with a mono/stereo switch at the front which at mono usage connect together both input signals coming from the connected MC cartridge.
